Mass Effect was originally a Christmas present for my son. I would periodically come into the room when he was playing it and I noticed that he had to make choices in conversations. "Interesting", I thought.
Some time later, I purchased Mass Effect 2 for him. I remember coming into the family room when he was scanning planets and thinking "Why would anyone do such a boring activity...repeatedly?"
When Mass Effect 3 came out, my son was old enough to purchase it on his own. He had an XBox 360 in his room and I did not enter and watch him play. However, I would hear him talking and discovered he was talking to friends online while playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer.
The beginning could have stopped there but...
